 Shopping Results--Giant Eagle

Today's shopping trip wasn't one of my best.  I did get a few god deals and several things we really needed.

When I first left the store, I was really bothered by my total being about $10 higher then what I figured.  I wasn't sure what I did wrong.  After I got everything home and unpacked, I began to review my receipt.  I found the $10 error and it wasn't my error.

I bought 2 value packs of sirloin tips steaks.  They are currently buy one get one free.    I chose 2 packages that were close in price & looked good.  This is what I normally do.  I didn't pay attention to the label on either package, other than the price.  The register charged me full price for both packages instead of deducting the lower priced package.

The hubster took the meat & receipt back to store.  At first, the woman working the customer service counter told him they couldn't refund our money because these are not the same cuts of meat.  One label reads "USDA Choice Beef Round VP Sirloin Tip Steak" while the other reads "USDA Choice Beef Round Sirloin Tip Steak".  He told her they are the same cuts.  She still refused.  He requested that she call the meat department manager to come to the service desk and check.  The meat department manager confirmed that they were in fact the same cut, that they were BOGO Free and that one package was labeled wrong.  He also instructed the customer service woman to refund our money!

If you plan to buy the steaks or roasts that are part of the BOGO Free sale this week, please check the wording on your packages to be sure they match.  Also, pay close attention when checking out to be sure that the lower priced package is deducted.

Not all shopping trips are going to yield a 60% savings and this is the perfect example of that.  I do feel that every penny I save counts!  I can say...I only saved a mere 47% and I usually do better.  Or I can say...I saved 47%!  That's close to 50% off regular prices!  And 50% off is great!

Monthly Savings Report

For the month of June, I budgeted $375.00 for all groceries & household items.  I'm so happy that I came in under budget again!  It wasn't as much under budget as May but that doesn't matter to me much.  The extra money will be added to our fun jar, which collects spare coins & left over money from our cash envelopes.

Here's my Shopping Stats:

Budgeted Amount: $375.00

Total Shelf Cost: $777.12
Total Coupon Savings: $180.45
Total Discounts: $246.44
Total Savings:  $431.81

As you can see, we came in $29.77 UNDER Budget!!!  Woohoo!  I'm going to do the happy dance now!

Shopping Results--CVS

Shopping at drugstores, such as CVS, Rite Aid & Walgreens can save you a ton of money, if you know how to work the deals.  I have a post planned for tomorrow titled The Drugstore Game: CVS.  Since that post isn't complete yet, I figured I'd show you my shopping results from my quick trip to CVS today.

I didn't buy a lot, however I saved a ton!  For those of you with small children, particularly ones still in diapers or training pants, you'll like this one!  Take a look:

I spent $21.00 for $57.75 worth of toddler items for a savings of nearly 64%!

This was done in 2 transactions
Here's how it worked:

Transaction #1

Special Promo: Spend $30 on select products, Get $10 ECBs (Limit 1)
(3) Huggies Pullups $10 each(Reg. $13.39 ea)
-(2) CVS coupons $2/1
-(3) Manufacturer coupons $2/1
Final Price $20

Total after all Coupons: $20.00
Total Savings: $20.17 (50%)
Earned: $10 Extra Care Bucks or ECB's

Transaction #2

(2) Huggies Baby Wipes 184ct $6.00 each(Reg. $8.79 ea)
-(2) Manufacturer coupons 50¢/1
-$10 ECBs from transaction #1

Total after all Coupons: $1.00
Total Savings: $16.58(over 94%!)
Earned: No ECBs Left

I buy 95% of all my family's H&B items at drugstores.  As you can see from today's transaction, there's a good reason why I take the time to go there.  It can yield much larger savings then this!  At first it can be a bit confusing to work out the drugstore deals, but I'm going to coach you through it the best I can.  Look for my post tomorrow covering CVS!

Shopping Results--Giant Eagle & Kuhn's 6/23/2012

I left the house by 10am this morning to go shopping.  I usually try to get going by 9, but I was slow to wake up today.  We all deserve days like that, right?
Anyways, the shopping trips went well.  There were a few things I had on my list that I didn't end up getting, but that's ok.  I ended up with 8 FREE packages of Bounty Napkins!
There was some debate this week on several blogs if the Bounty deal would work or not.  The Giant Eagle ad states "trail" sized napkins & paper towels are on sale for $1.  The coupon states 50¢/1 Bounty Napkin(excluding trail size).  However, I inspected the package thoroughly and no where did it say "trail size" or "trail package".  So I think the deal is legit.  I see no issue with using the coupon for the napkins.  The register accepted it without issue.
In my opinion, it was just poor wording in the ad.  These things happen sometimes.  Just always check the packaging & your coupon to be certain you are buying the correct item that the coupon states.
Take a look at this week's shopping trip:
At Kuhn's, I paid $6.84 for $14.30 worth of groceries for a savings of over 52%!
Surprisingly, I did not use any coupons at Kuhn's.
Here's the breakdown:

Red Seedless Grapes $1.78(1.80lb)
These are on sale for 99¢/lb which is a great price!

(2) Red Bell Peppers $1.08(1.09lb)
These are on sale for 99¢/lb!  Awesome price!  I see them as high as $3.99/lb!

(2) Domino Sugar-4lb. $1.99 ea.
Not sure of the regular price of these.  However, sugar has gone up in price in recent months so this is a great deal!
If you have the April issue of Food Netword Magazine, there's a $1/1 coupon in it to make this deal even sweeter!  I'm bummed because I threw mine away a few weeks ago :(

At Giant Eagle, I paid $56.72 for $119.57 worth of groceries for a savings of over 52%!
I had to separate this order into 2 transactions due to Giant Eagle's limitation on IP(internet printable) coupons.  They only allow 2 like IP coupons per transaction.  There was also a limitation on the Bounty coupons, 4 like coupons per transaction.
Here's the breakdown:

Total after all coupons: $64.29
Total Savings: $59.20

All & all this shopping trip was successful.  I ended up with 9 lbs. of butter!  The great thing about stocking up on butter is that it freezes great.  I don't have to worry about using it before it goes bad.  The only thing I didn't score was Sun Drop pop(soda for you non Pittsburghers).  It's $1 each wyb 5.  There are $1/1 coupons for it, making it free.  The shelf was cleaned out!  That's ok.  Hubster doesn't really need anymore pop.  I'm satisfied with the 54% savings today!

So there's your first peek into how grocery shopping in my world works.  Please post any questions or comment you have.

Here's my May shopping stats:

Total Budgeted Amount: $375.00 (for all food & household items, including H&B)

Total Shelf Cost: $631.17
Total Coupon Savings: $166.41
Total Discounts(i.e.Sales)$188.82
Total Savings: $355.23
Amount Paid: $275.94
Savings Rate: 56.28%

We came in $99.06 UNDER budget for May!!!  Yippeeee!  I think spending $275 to feed a family of 4 for 1 month is awesome!  I'm extremely happy and hubster thinks I'm a superhero!
