Challenge: 30 Days to an Organized Home--Day 14

Challenge: 30 Days to an Organized Home--Day 14

Good Morning!  I hope you had a nice weekend.  Ours was busy and fun!

Assignment #14

Spice Cabinet or Drawer

Today we'll be organizing our spice cabinet or drawer.  But first, let's go over a few important facts about spices & herbs.

Did you know ground spices only last about 2-3 years?  Spices do not go bad in the sense of becoming rancid or spoiled, but they do lose potency and complex layers of flavor. When spices lose their power, they should be discarded and replaced with fresh ones.

And dried herbs?   Most herbs last between one and three years. Test  herbs by crushing them lightly in your hand. If the herbs still smell, they are good, even if the color has changed. If no odor rises after crushing, discard the old herbs.

Now that we know how long to keep our spices & herbs, let's get to it.  Start by removing all your spice & herbs from your cabinet or drawer.  Test the ones that you feel may be past their prime.  Clean your cabinet or drawer.  The vacuum will come in handy if it's a drawer.  Use the crevice tool to suck crumbs out of the drawer.

After the drawer is clean, put your spice away.  Here's a ideas:
  • Aphabetically
  • Separate spices from herbs.  Use one side for spices & the other for herbs.
  • By most used.  This is how I'll likely organize my drawer(this way will probably not appeal to my OCD friends).  However, putting something I use often in the back will not be convenient for me.
Make sure you organize your cabinet or drawer so that it works for you.

Frugal Tip:  If you want your drawer to look uniform, you can purchase small spice jars at the dollar store and label them.

Check back tonight at 9 pm for my results & linky!

Live Frugal.  Live Happy.
